Good Fortune Clues 6 and 7

This clue, #6, went together quickly because I already had a basket full of neutral strips and strings of various sizes.  I only had to cut a few extra for more variety!

Bonnie surprised us on New Year's Day with a mid-week clue, #7.  I won't have time to sew it all this week because it's time to deal with the house - undecorating, and restoring normalcy after having had a guest for over a week.  However, I laid out the pieces for the clue, and took the time to make a sample of each clue.

Good Fortune Clue 5

Every year doing mystery quilts, when this unit appears as the one to do, I cringe.  I don't know if it's my lack of accurate cutting ability that is the problem or not.  I made four test blocks, adjusting the seam allowance each time, and thought I had it right, but many of the blocks are just the tiniest bit too small.  They will work, though.  My blocks like this from previous quilts weren't as good, but I was able to use them and you'd never know the difference in the finished quilts!

Good Fortune Clue 4

There were multiple methods given to make this week's clue, ranging from just cutting orange rectangles the right size, to sewing strip sets and cutting, or using lots of orange strings (long, thin, sometimes wonky strips of fabric) to paper piece using a foundation of easy-to-tear paper.  I opted for piecing the strings using phone book paper since I figured I really didn't need that 2013 phone book any more!

Good Fortune Clue 3

Thanks to some cold rainy weather this weekend, it has been easy to stay indoors and sew.  This photo shows my Clue 3 results.  I used the first method in Bonnie Hunter's instructions and found I was more accurate this way than in the past with the specialty rulers.

Good Fortune Clue 2

This week's clue called for making blue and neutral half square triangles.  Having done these now for a few other mystery quilts, I found I've gotten a lot more proficient and was able to finish these fairly quickly with accurate results.
